Natural Deodorant

Sweating is a natural and necessary function of our bodies, but it gives the bacteria that live on our skin the perfect environment to multiply which can lead to unwanted body odor.  To rid ourselves of this odor we often turn to the most convenient solution, over the counter deodorant.  Rows upon rows of colorful tubes look back at us with promises of 24 or even 48 hour odor protection.  Am I the only one that wonders what can kill bacteria for 48 hours with just one application?

Most deodorants include ingredients that are at best questionable and at worst toxic or carcinogenic.  Parabens, phthalates, triclosan…even “aluminum-free” deodorants often contain propylene glycol which is listed as a toxic substance at the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease.

Thankfully there is a simple alternative to slathering chemicals and toxins under your arms every morning to prevent body odor.  Make your own deodorant spray!

All ingredients in the deodorant spray are naturally derived from plants.  Aloe vera is soothing and has anti-fungal properties, and witch hazel is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.

Ingredients:

15 ml witch hazel

35 ml aloe vera gel (or juice)

50-60 drops tea tree oil*

2 oz glass spray bottle**

Instructions: mix ingredients into spray bottle, shake well.

That’s it!  A simple, inexpensive way to reduce the chemicals in your home and on your skin.

To use, apply 2-3 sprays to underarms as needed.

*If you don’t enjoy the fragrance of tea tree oil you can use lemongrass, peppermint, eucalyptus or lavender which all have anti bacterial properties.

**If you make larger batches of deodorant spray, I would recommend storing in the refrigerator.
